Upcoming

Sun City Pickleball Club Posted on February 6, 2023 by Allen GilsonFebruary 6, 2023

Hello Sun City Pickleball

Some upcoming dated to remember.

The Club Tournament is coming on Saturday February 18th. The signup for this event is now on our website. Thanks to Barb and Richard Haywood for being the tournament directors for this event.

Our next Fun Day is Friday February the 10th at the Mountain View courts. The fun begins at 4pm. Bring a snack to share, beverage of your choice and your best social pickleball skills.

An event being added to our calendar is a mixed Round Robin for players with a 4,3 or higher rating. The Round Robin will be on Saturdays from 9am to 11am at the Marinette, courts 1-3. Talk to Karen McAdams for more details.

The Rodeo was a huge success! Thanks to Liz Smoot for organizing this event. Thanks to Deb Lantzy for organizing the food. Also, a big thanks to all the volunteers and those who participated.

Karen Young is still in need for some 4.0+ players to fill out the A roster for the up coming reciprocal play VS Sun City West.

As always, happy hitting and look forward to seeing you on the courts.
Dan

Intergenerational Round Robin Off-Spring Fling

Sun City Pickleball Club Posted on November 5, 2022 by Allen GilsonNovember 7, 2022

Do you have family coming to visit over the Easter holiday?

There is an opportunity for RCSC card holders and specifically SCPC members to play a round robin with a family member, a child or grandchild, a niece, nephew, or whatever relative you have hanging around.

Don’t want to play? that’s okay. Come watch this fun event. Evelyn is also looking for a couple of volunteers to assist so let her know if you are interested in helping out.

Look for: Intergenerational Round Robin Off-Spring Fling on the club website.

Saturday, April 8th 2:00-4:00 pm.

We will have two different skill levels. One friendly and slower paced and one faster and more competitive.

We will take 52 players—26 teams, 12 teams will play in each level. The last two spots on the sign up will be for “stand by” players.

Important information:

  • Guest players must be a minimum of ten years of age.
  • Players must have a reasonably good understanding of the game and at least some skill level. They must be able to call score, move to the kitchen line appropriately, understand calling out balls, etc. It is not an event for players who have not played before or very little experience.
  • All teams must stay to the very end. If you bail out early it will leave a large hole in the bracket and the remaining games will have a team forced to sit out. There will be a minimum of six games and a maximum of seven.
  • If you register and then plans don’t work out, please go back into sign up genius and take your name off the registration so others can sign up.
  • There are special sign-up instructions for this event. It is imperative that you read the attachment on Sign Up Genius.
  • Each non-RCSC person must pay guest fee of $2.50. This can be paid:
    • on-line via the web portal
    • a punch card for $20 (you get eight punches) can be purchased from the rec center with cash

Fun Day

Sun City Pickleball Club Posted on May 7, 2022 by Bill BoothMay 7, 2022

The Friday morning fun day at the Marinette was a huge success.
We had approximately 130 participants. It must have been the free donuts? It did appear to be a “fun day” with lots of laughter, chit chat and some fun pickleball games thrown in.
Thanks to Deb Lantzy and her helpers for organizing the food and drinks.

Our club is growing daily. Which is now making some of our club activities very popular, with high demand and limited court time. Evelyn Larsen has such an event. The round robin she coordinates on Wednesday mornings has become very popular. The thought was once the snowbirds left and we started the summer schedule the numbers for her RR would drop. This past Wednesday that was not the case. If you wish to participate in Evelyn’s Wednesday RR moving forward, you will need to sign up via Sign-Up Genius.

The paddle holders at the Marinette are starting to be used effectively, especially on courts 13 through 20. On courts 1-4 and inside the pavilion there is still some room for improvement. When ALL the courts are being used, using the paddle holders is the fairest, most effective way for people to rotate on and off the courts. Your group of players play a single game and then come off the courts. The next set of four paddles goes onto the vacated court. Those of you wishing to play with same foursome just need to put your paddles together in the next available slot. If you have a question about how the paddle holder system works, please ask one of our board members (red and white name tags). Many of our more experienced players will also be able to help you.

Courts are getting used earlier and earlier. Maybe the heat?

Happy Hitting,
Dan H.

End of Season

Sun City Pickleball Club Posted on April 23, 2022 by Bill BoothApril 23, 2022

Good Afternoon

May 1st is right around the corner. The temps are rising, The Snowbirds are heading back to their summer homes. What a great winter season Sun City pickleball has had!
We’ve had so much to be thankful for this season from October 1st 2021 until now almost May 1st 2022. Many of our Canadian friends were able to return to Sun City after a covid lock down. All of our rec centers remained open the entire winter. Our club was able to return back to most of its scheduled events. Round Robins, ladders. lessons, clinics, club tournaments and The Round Up and The Spring Slam. A huge thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who made these events possible.

We do have a fun day coming up on May 6th at the Marinette, from 7 am to 10 am. The club will provide donuts, muffins, coffee and some juice drinks. All you need to do is show up and have fun.

We have new reciprocal play leaders. Next year in our play versus Sun City West, Karen and Wil Young will be the go to coordinators for this activity. Thanks Karen and Wil.

The summer schedule which starts on May 1st can be found on our web page. There will be numerous weekly activities. Modified pickleball, social pickleball, women’s ladders and round robins, mixed round robins and ladders. A men’s Thursday ladder being coordinated by Marc Ward. Contact Marc if interested. This ladder is a continuation of the ladder Mike Luke did during the winter.

I’d also like to thank Jon Flach for his efforts in organizing an 80+ year old group of our young at heart pickleball players. At last count this group included 22 members.

All for now. Stay safe and as always happy hitting.
Dan .

Odds and Ends

Sun City Pickleball Club Posted on March 13, 2022 by Bill BoothMarch 13, 2022

80 degrees today. Yahoo!

The Desert Frogs vs Snowbirds was a great club event. Lots of fun and laughter and just a little competitive juice thrown in. A huge thanks to Marcia Gregory for being the tournament director. Marcia also had some great helpers. Thanks to Winston, Shirley, Ros, Jane and Jeff. The Snowbirds “won” the event, but getting our club together was the important thing.

Thanks to Deb Lantzy and her helpers for setting up and organizing the food for the Farewell Dinner. Again, a fun time was had by one and all.

Thanks to Evelyn Larson for organizing a round robin at the Mountain View to accommodate our club members who were not able to get signed up for the Frogs vs Snowbirds.

Ilja Gregor would like to thank all who donated paddles to his son’s PE class. Ilja was able to send off 30 paddles to his son due to your generosity

I got an interesting email from an Ernesto Velazquez a founder and tournament director of a pickleball club and tournament in Spain. He is having two PB tournaments in Spain, One in June and one July. He is to be sending me more information about promotional packs to go to Spain for these events. If you want to go to Spain to play some PB let me know and I’ll pass on info as I get it.

With the warmer weather approaching, please if you are the last players on the courts at the Marinette or Mt. View pick up the balls and put them into a cooler. Thanks.

Membership meeting on Tuesday, March 15th, at 5 pm at Mt. View auditorium.

All for now, I’m sure someone will remind me tomorrow of something I left out of the email.

See you all on Tuesday,
Dan H.

Fast

Sun City Pickleball Club Posted on February 21, 2022 by Bill BoothFebruary 21, 2022

WOW! I think the Desert Frogs vs Snowbird tournament set a record for the quickest sign-up for a club event ever? Still spots open for the Farewell Dinner.

Knowing that not everyone who wanted to play in the Frogs vs Snowbird tournament was able to get in, here is another option for you on March 12th. Evelyn Larson has offered to run a Round Robin at the Mt. View courts on March 12th starting at 3 pm. No sign-up needed just show up before 3 pm at the Mt. View courts.

Got an unused paddle laying around? Ilja Gregor has a son who going to be teaching Pickleball in his physical education class. His budget does not have sufficient funds to purchase enough paddles for the class. If you have an extra paddle you can spare bring it to the courts and give it to Ilja or myself.

Hearing rumors we are in for a weather change on Wednesday.

All for now,
Dan H..
