End of Season

Sun City Pickleball Club Posted on April 23, 2022 by Bill BoothApril 23, 2022

Good Afternoon

May 1st is right around the corner. The temps are rising, The Snowbirds are heading back to their summer homes. What a great winter season Sun City pickleball has had!
We’ve had so much to be thankful for this season from October 1st 2021 until now almost May 1st 2022. Many of our Canadian friends were able to return to Sun City after a covid lock down. All of our rec centers remained open the entire winter. Our club was able to return back to most of its scheduled events. Round Robins, ladders. lessons, clinics, club tournaments and The Round Up and The Spring Slam. A huge thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who made these events possible.

We do have a fun day coming up on May 6th at the Marinette, from 7 am to 10 am. The club will provide donuts, muffins, coffee and some juice drinks. All you need to do is show up and have fun.

We have new reciprocal play leaders. Next year in our play versus Sun City West, Karen and Wil Young will be the go to coordinators for this activity. Thanks Karen and Wil.

The summer schedule which starts on May 1st can be found on our web page. There will be numerous weekly activities. Modified pickleball, social pickleball, women’s ladders and round robins, mixed round robins and ladders. A men’s Thursday ladder being coordinated by Marc Ward. Contact Marc if interested. This ladder is a continuation of the ladder Mike Luke did during the winter.

I’d also like to thank Jon Flach for his efforts in organizing an 80+ year old group of our young at heart pickleball players. At last count this group included 22 members.

All for now. Stay safe and as always happy hitting.
Dan .

Fun Day

Sun City Pickleball Club Posted on April 4, 2022 by Bill BoothApril 4, 2022

Good Afternoon

Just a reminder there is a fun day at the Mountain View courts this Thursday, April 7th from 4 pm to 7 pm. Bring a snack to share, your beverage of choice and a plan to have some fun on the courts with your fellow Sun City Pickleball Club members.

The committee that is looking into the options for getting courts at the Lake View met for the first time. We came up with a list of needed criteria to make the current footprint have quality courts. The current footprint, though capable of having 14 courts, the committee felt that 14 courts would not meet the standards of what we hope to have with our courts. Our goal is to have as many quality courts as possible and will continue to work toward that goal. We also plan to submit a recommendation to the RCSC that the Lake View current footprint be enlarged to accommodate not only more courts, but good standard size pickleball courts.

If you’re not only a pickleball player, but also have some dance moves, contact Richard Haywood. Richard would like to have a table of pickleball players/dancers sit together at the Rockin’ Thru The Years club dances.

The combination lock has been put on the cooler at the Mt. View courts. You can get the combination from a board member or there are numerous Mt. View players who can pass the combo onto you.

Snowbirds are heading home, temps are rising, summer must be coming.

New Activity

Sun City Pickleball Club Posted on January 24, 2022 by Bill BoothJanuary 24, 2022

Good afternoon, Sun City pickleball players.

The club has recently added a new pickleball activity we want to make you aware of. It’s called Social Pickleball. This activity will be available starting Monday January 31st at 2 pm at the Marinette. And also, on Saturdays at 1 pm also at the Marinette. You can sign up for these events on our website.
So, what’s Social Pickleball? It’s an offshoot of Modified pickleball.
Definition of Social Pickleball:
A non-competitive round robin format. For players looking for a fun, comfortable, social, non-competitive type of play. Players should be able to move around the court safely. Players of various skill levels are perfect for this group. Standard pickleball rules are used.
Definition of Modified Pickleball:
A round robin format for players with limited mobility and/or permanent physical disabilities. Also, for those players recovering from a debilitating surgery. Modified pickleball allows a player two service tries and two ball bounces for players.
Thank you to Kathryn Rabe who is the social pickleball coordinator and Allen Gilson the modified pickleball coordinator.

There are still slots available for the rating clinics on Saturday January 29th and Saturday February 5th. You can sign up for these on our website. We highly recommend you attend one of these clinics if you do not already have a USA PICKLEBALL rating or a current club rating. A goal of our club is that all club members will need a rating in order to sign up for clinics and lessons. Thanks to Lis Smoot for coordinating these rating sessions.

There is now a sign up for our 2022 Club Tournament on Friday February 18th. Play starts at 10 am plan on arriving before 9;45 am. This sign up is also on our website. Pizza lunch to follow tournament on Marinette patio. Bring your own beverages.

Pickleballs seem to be mysteriously disappearing from the Mt. View courts???? Please do not take balls for yourself or to put into your bags. Until a solution can be found all club members help would be appreciated. One “possible” theory is the courts are getting used not only by non-club members, but possibly non- Sun City residences. Just keep your eyes open.

All for now,
Happy Hitting,
Dan H.

1. During all club activities including drop-in play Monday-Friday 7am to 11am you are REQUIRED to wear your name tag. Please don’t take offense or get defensive if a board member or another club member asks where your name tag if not wearing during club time/activities. It’s required.
2. You have agreed to volunteer a minimum of 4 hours to the club. There is currently a volunteer sign up for the Spring Slam on our website
3.You have agreed to “demonstrate good sportsmanship and respect for others”. This includes making sure all players get equal access to the use of the courts.

RWB Color Tournament – Volunteer Luncheon – Ladders

Sun City Pickleball Club Posted on October 7, 2021 by Bill BoothOctober 7, 2021

Good afternoon this Thursday Sun City Pickleball Club Members,

And the weather is cooperating!!! Fall is a beautiful temp season – “October heat relief”!

Here is a bit more information about a few Club events/activities that are “happening soon”! Links for sign ups are on our Club Website suncitypickleballclub.org

RED WHITE BLUE GREY/BLACK COLOR TOURNAMENT – Monday, November 8 – 3 pm – Marinette

This event is quite like a “round robin” combined with a bit of a “ladder element”. There will be 4 teams divided into 4 color groups – each team member will wear the specific color assigned to their team . . . players will be equally divided into groups of 20 players with similar skill levels competing against each other. There are 3 skill levels that seem to be easiest to identify with – Beginner (novice to 1.5 rating), Intermediate (2.0 – 3.0 rating) and Advanced (3.5 up). This a great opportunity (in a “friendly”, “little competitive” atmosphere) to try out your play with many others of a similar skill level (and meet more nice people in our Club). Each player will play 5 games – sometimes you may play with another player of your color team vs players from other teams. Each game will be with a group of different players – all in the same skill level. No color team member plays against their own team mate – only compete against players from other color teams. Each player accumulates points for their color team. So, if a red team member is teamed with a blue team member, their score counts for each of their teams . . . the other color team (like a blue team member and grey/black team member) accumulates points for their team. The color team with the most points at the end of all games are the “champs”! What fun and team camaraderie!! Sign up, get on a team, wear your color, cheer on your teammates!! There will be some refreshments at the end of play. Volunteers needed!!

VOLUNTEER LUNCHEON – Saturday, November 13 – 11 am – Bell Center Auditorium

A thank you event for all who have Volunteered (4 or more hours) over the last 2 years . . . yes, 2 years because of the “Covid” situation – so, all of 2020 which includes the SSIPA Tournament in January, the Spring Slam in March, plus all those who volunteered with Clinics, Lessons, Ladders, Round Robins, Set Up Committees, etc . . . There are so many Club Members who have volunteered so much of their time . . . come let us “wine” (not really) and dine you with some refreshments and “prizes”!

LADDERS

There are several Ladders (Womens – Mondays, Mens – Thursdays, and Mixed – Fridays) starting soon – all at 11 a.m. A link for sign ups can be found by clicking on “Activities” on our Club Website home page for specific start dates. Thank you to Patty Evans, Mike Luke, Kevin Pates and Dan Haberman for getting these Ladders back “in play”!!

For now,
Dave B
