Surprise Pickleball Association is looking for line judges for its Tommy Wong and Southwest Regional Championships, which run back to back from January 3 through 12. They are paying $5 per match for their “Volunteers”. If interested, contact Marlene Berwald @ 219-688-3022.
We will be selling no Christmas Party tickets after noon Monday (Dec 2). I will be at Marinette Monday from about 8:30 til at least 10:00 with tickets. If you want tickets and that still doesn’t work for you, please contact Frank Spina to make arrangements. If you have dietary restrictions, please contact Frank, also.
Our last Club Meting of 2019 will be Friday (Dec 6) @1;00 @ Marinette. The Men’s Round Robin has been cancelled, and the Beginner Paddle Up, which is moving to Fridays at 2:00, has been delayed until 3:00 for this week only.

Lobster, Wed. Robin, Paddle Rack, Tickets, Thanksgiving
A new supply of orange balls has been added to the Lobster at Marinette. Please do not use other balls in the machine. Also, please PICK UP ALL THE ORANGE BALLS AND RETURN THEM TO THE LOBSTER.
Evelyn Larsen has agreed to take over leadership of the Wednesday (10AM) Round Robin. Courts 9-20 have been set aside for this event. Thanks Evelyn!
The new paddle rack has finally been installed at courts 17-20 at Marinette. One has been in use at Mountain View for several years w great success. Place your paddle in the first available slot – the players represented by those paddles is the next group to play. If you must continue to play as a foursome, your paddles go in the next available slot and you play once the groups before you have been completed and gone.to play. There will almost always be someone around with experience at Mountain View who can guide you.
Our Christmas Party (Dec 7) is 2 weeks from yesterday, but ticket sales will end one week from tomorrow (Dec 2)! Frank Spina will be at Mountain View Tuesday from about 7:45 to 8:45 with tickets, and someone will be at Marinette Tuesday evening from 5:30 til 7:00. We also plan having someone at Marinette M/W/F mornings from 8:30 til 10:00. These plans may be modified if the weather does as forecast!
,
The Mountain View courts will be open Thanksgiving Day from 8 – 4. The current forecast indicates that may not matter, but experience says these weather people are no more accurate than ours were in New England! Hope to see you there!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Dave
Balls, Rain, Robin
Things at Marinette have gotten a bit sloppy regarding returning balls to the coolers and the coolers to the pavilion. While the heat is behind us and the cold is not yet here, sunlight is an enemy of all plastic objects regardless of temperature. Please make a concentrated effort to load the balls into the cooler, and bring the cooler under cover, if yours is the last group leaving the courts.
Rain is in the forecast for later today and most of tomorrow. As you all know – or should – a guest cannot displace a Cardholder at any time. Again, please do not bring your guests during busy times, such as drop in play in the morning. Rotating off the courts or not, they are not to displace Cardholders and are not welcome during these busy times. This is true at any time, but especially during rain and/or heavily windy.times. Your cooperation will be appreciated.
The Wednesday Round Robin, which most likely will be cancelled tomorrow due to the weather, does not have a leader as of now. It would be great to have one person running it each week, but until then anyone can get the sheets from the kiosk and run the event. Courts 9-20 are set aside at 10AM.
Thanks!
Dave
Sun City vs Sun City West Reciprocal – November 2019
Well it was another fine day for Sun City Pickleball Club! All our players came out to win today and win we did! We beat Sun City West 63 games to 45 games and in points it was a blowout – 941 points to 791 points! Congratulations to all the players today. Fun was had by all.

Round Robins, Tickets
The Wednesday Round Robin had very few participants this past week, perhaps because there was no publicity and no pre-registration. This event goes on at 10:00 and is usually run by Pat Sterba. In Pat’s absence, however, any participant can take the Round Robin sheets and get started.
The Mens League did not have enough participants to get started. For the time being there is a Mens Round Robin taking place on Fridays at noon. Once there are enough players, the League will start up as originally planned.
As of now, we have sold approximately 175 tickets for the Christmas party. It’s still 3 weeks away, but there is a limit to the number of tickets we can sell, so don’t procrastinate on this!
Vol Lunch, Modified PB, Colors Tournament
Good Morning!
Today is your last opportunity to register for our Volunteer Luncheon, which will take place Saturday at Marinette. Lunch will be served around noon; setup will be completed for 11:00. You need to have volunteered for any Club event to be eligible. Register on our website via Signup Genius.
The following is from Allen Gilson, who, along with Becky Pfeiler and Sue Bryant, is organizing this program this season. Perhaps you have friends or neighbors who aren’t quite ready for regular Pickleball but might enjoy the game when played at a slower pace, with others with various limitations. This might be for them.
“Modified Pickleball is for those with physical limitations, and those wanting a low-intensity/less-competitive game.
This event is for those who want to play for fun, or perhaps you’ve had surgery recently or have some aches and pains and would like to become physically active again. Rules of the game will be modified to compensate for whatever limitations there may be. If you can stand you can play.
Courts № 5&6 are reserved at the Marinette Recreation Center on Tuesdays from 10-11a.m. and Wednesdays from 2-3p.m. Check the calendar for exceptions for holidays and tournaments.”
The Colors Tournament yesterday at Marinette went well, and everyone seemed to have a great time. Thanks to all our Volunteers and especially to Richard and Barbara Heywood for taking this over for us this year, and to Marcia Gregory, who organized the first one several years ago, for her guidance.
Thanks!
Dave
Courts Still Closed! Friday Nights
Marinette Courts 1-12 will remain closed til noon Saturday. Apparently the extra time is needed because of the weather this week. Please pay attention to the signage regarding this: the fact that there is no barbed wire and armed guards does not mean the courts are available!
Murray and Terry Griffen are back to welcome us to Couples Night/Social Night at Marinette on Fridays from 5 til whenever. While the weather holds, dinner will probably be a picnic on the patio. Bring a lunch and your drink of choice, play a little PB and enjoy some great conversation.
Modified Pickleball
Play resumes November 12th, 2019
Modified Pickleball is for those with physical limitations and those wanting a low-intensity/less-competitive game.
The Sun City Pickleball Club is looking for fans of the game who want to play just for fun, and those with temporary or permanent physical limitations. Players with physical limitations will be given an opportunity to play by modifying the rules to meet their needs.
If you can stand, you can play Modified Pickleball. A Monitor will help the players decide which rules to modify. For example: maybe 2 bounces of the ball are allowed rather than one; or a Server has 2 tries to land the ball in the opposite quadrant.
The Sun City Pickleball Club hopes such an experience will be less intimidating and provide an opportunity to get involved in a wonderful sport and meet a new group of friends.
Courts for Modified Pickleball are reserved at the Marinette Recreation Center in the pickleball pavilion on Tuesdays from 10 – 11:00 a.m. and Wednesdays from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Check the calendar for exceptions for holidays and tournaments. The Marinette Recreation Center is located at 9860 W Union Hills Drive in Sun City.
This activity is open to all current Recreation Centers of Sun City cardholders. If players aren’t members of the Sun City Pickleball Club, they must join the club after three Modified Pickleball sessions. Paddles, if needed, can be checked out at the Marinette front desk. Tennis shoes or court shoes are required on the courts.
Reciprocal Results
It was a great turnout for the 1st reciprocal of the season with Sun City West!
After the women’s and men’s doubles, we were tied with Sun City West, each having 27 games won, but Sun City was ahead 230 points to 223 points.
After the mixed doubles round, Sun City ended up beating Sun City West
with following total scores:
Sun City 58 games, 727 game points
Sun City West 50 games, with 637 game points
Thanks again for participating! Special thanks to Cindy Golden and Bob Thacker for score keeping.
Pavilion, Meeting, Fun Day, Rain
The Pavilion will be COMPLETELY CLOSED this week for the new lighting to be installed. This is not what we were told a few days ago, but is the latest as of 10:00 or so this morning. Courts 1 – 4 will be accessible through the gate at the far end of the patio area. It appears this project will take all week, so the Friday ladder probably will be cancelled.
Our next Club MEMBERSHIP MEETING will be next Monday, October 21st, at 4 at Marinette. There will be a lot of information about the season ahead, voting on a couple of possible Bylaw changes, and Nomination of Officers. Please try to be there!
Our next FUN DAY will be tomorrow, Tuesday, at 5 at Mountain View. Come play a little pickleball and visit with old and new friends. Bring a snack to share if you wish, and your drink of choice. Please, NO GLASS! After one of these events, including last week’s, there are always questions about when we will do this again. In this case, there is this one tomorrow night, but there also is play 5 evenings a week at Marinette and evening play will begin again soon at Mountain View.
There will eventually be RAIN in Sun City, and it will once again lead to questions about court use. Ladders, leagues and Round Robins will run, or not, at each Captain’s discretion. If they run, they will do so on 6 courts or less, with 2 courts left available for all RCSC cardholders to use on a rotating basis. Guests, since they cannot displace a cardholder, should not be brought during the rain as they may very well not be allowed to play at all! Please bear in mind that cancellation of one event does not necessarily mean the whole day will be a washout – cancellation decisions will be made on an event by event basis.
