SIX WOMEN’S DOUBLES MEDALS CLAIMED ON HALLOWEEN
The Sun City Pickleball Club accounted for five medals on Halloween Thursday, including two golds, as the Fall Roundup tournament concluded three days at the Marinette Recreation Center in Sun City, presented by Aetna Medicare Solutions.
A perfect weather day — sun, little wind and temperatures in the 60s and 70s — greeted the women’s doubles teams. A field of 410, age 50 and older, competed this week in the club’s first major event of 2019-20, sanctioned by USA Pickleball.
One of the day’s highlights was in the 4.5 skill level, age 50 and older. Sun City member Sylvia Csabon teamed with Traci Willis to win the title in an ultimate tiebreaker, 15-7, against Janet Wilson and Carol O’Brien. Also claiming gold for the host club were Joyce Troyer and Carolyn Pritchett in 3.0, 70 and older.
Taking bronze medals were: Diana Graham and Martha Nause in 3.0, 60 and older; Carole Hutchinson and Jean Ward in 3.5, 70 and older; and Susan Anfinson and Lyla Reibel in 4.5, 60 and older. Lori Killian and CJ Johnson won bronze in 3.0, 50 and older.
The next major tournament is the Sun City Marinette Super Senior International Pickleball event Jan. 28-30, 2020. The Sun City Spring Slam is March 3-8.
CLUB NETS SIX MEDALS IN MIXED DOUBLES
Some strange Arizona weather didn’t deter Sun City Pickleball Club members from netting six medals Wednesday, including three golds.
High-powered morning winds, and temps in the 40s, forced play onto Marinette’s eight covered courts. But by the afternoon, with temperatures warming close to 70 and the winds subsiding, play included the club’s 12 outdoor courts.
Claiming championship titles were Carole Hutchinson and Frank Spina at 3.0 for those 70 and older; Michele Kiesling and Tom Jeffers at 3.0 and 60 and older; and club member Cheryl St. John teamed with Mike Agostinelli at 4.0 and 50 and older.
Silver medals went to Michelle Orton and Doug White, 3.0 and 70 and older; and member Jan Hodgson with Philip Scholl, 3.5 and 70 and older.
A bronze medal was taken by club member Charlotte Peters and Michael Koehlmoos at 3.0 and 70 and older.
MEN’S DOUBLES COMPLETED ON FIRST DAY
Club members earned three silver medals Tuesday (Oct. 29).
Bob Thacker and Norris Bryant combined to place second in men’s 3.0, age 70 and older; Sun City player Glenn Jones teamed with Clarence Lindblom for silver in 3.5 at 50 and older; and Sun City’s Scott Sutherland, with Terry Cullen, were second in 4.0, 60 and older.
