Hello to all of the Sun City Pickleball Club members. I am still in Illinois and getting anxious for my winter visit to Sun City. Luckily for our club, our Vice President, Dave Breault, has been keeping the club’s activities going really well during my absence. I really appreciate all of the work that he has completed during the summer, and it’s good to know that he has had lots of help from many of our club members. So let’s talk about what’s going on for our club.
Introductory to Pickleball Instructions … Bill and Jan Booth have volunteered to provide the free introductory lessons for anyone new to Pickleball. Players will be introduced to the fundamentals of the game including scoring, rules, court orientation and execution. Registration will be accepted through our website at SunCityPickleballClub.org. Lessons will probably start about October 1 [Editor’s note: introductory lessons begin Sept 19].
MountainView Fun Day … Come and play pickleball with club members at MountainView courts on Thursday, September 28 from 4-7pm. This is just a social event with pick-up games for all levels of play. The club will provide ice and water. Please feel free to bring a snack to share.
General Membership Meeting … Our next club meeting is Friday, October 6 at the Marinette Auditorium from 4-5pm. We will discuss old and new business as well as all of our upcoming events. We need input from our membership so please plan to attend.
Marinette Fun Day … We need to cancel the October 30th Fun Day scheduled for Marinette because the Shootout tourney starts October 31st and we need all hands on deck to finish the preparation for this club event.
Rodeo Event … Our annual rodeo/skills event will be held on Friday, October 20th at Marinette courts from 3-7 pm. This is open to everyone and each event will be skill level adjusted. This is a good opportunity to test your current skill level against other club members and helps determine which skills need more practice and drills for improvement.
Fall Shootout at Sun City … Barry Woods is our Director for this club event to be held on October 31 – November 2. Edwards Jones will sponsor this tourney and provide Volunteer t-shirts and neon Dura 40 balls. Dave Breault is preparing the volunteer signups so look for the poster that will be at the Marinette Pavilion in the near future.
Team RWBG Color Tournament … Kathy Masters has volunteered to coordinate this event to be held on Saturday, November 11th from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Marinette Courts. A potluck will be held in the auditorium afterwards. More information will be published soon. Look for registrations on SignUp Genius.
Christmas Party … Our club Christmas event is set for Saturday, December 2nd. The DJ, John Urzi, is booked and Sharkos Catering has also been reserved. We still need someone to step up and coordinate this event and we’ll need volunteers that day for setup. Please contact me or Dave Breault if you’re interested in this task.
New Club Flyer … A revised club flyer has been approved by the RCSC office and will be distributed to all the recreation centers. Thanks to Bill Booth and Dave Breault for updating our previous flyer. Hope everyone looks for it during your next visit to a Center.
Fans for the Pavilion … Since we will not be able to pursue the large ceiling fans at this time, the only other option now is to purchase standing fans to be used inside the Pavilion to help circulate air. Dave Breault, Rich Peterson, and Larry Klein have had many discussions with RCSC’s Chris Herring and Jim Wellman and have approval to select the appropriate size fans. Further discussion will occur at our next general meeting.
Storage Shed … From our 2018 requests for Facility Improvements, it has been approved by RCSC to purchase a storage shed to be installed by the Marinette Pavilion. RCSC will provide electrical power for this unit for lights and power supply for our ball machine. We will discuss this issue and potentially request club approval for this purchase at our next general meeting.
Bulletin Board at MountainView … A new work order has been approved to get a bulletin board installed at MountainView. This should be installed within the next few weeks.
Sun Shade at MountainView … Even though this was approved in 2016, this item has been put on hold. It was determined that additional work would have to be completed to properly hold the shade using the existing structure at MountainView. Jim Wellman from RCSC is reviewing this issue.
Court Shades at Marinette Pavilion … Rich Peterson has completed a comprehensive study of our current lighting and visibility issues inside the Pavilion. I will ask Rich to discuss his findings at our next general meeting if he is available. RCSC has stated that the lights will be upgraded prior to the Shootout tourney. Rich is also suggesting that an additional shade be installed to improve ball visibility on the bottom 10 feet of the current black shades. We will potentially order 2 new shades to test for improvement before pursuing additional purchases. Rich has requested bids from a few suppliers.
A special thanks to Dave Breault, Rich Peterson, and Larry Klein for meeting with Chris Herring and Jim Wellman on several occasions to discuss facility improvements.
As you can see, our club has many issues to discuss at the next general meeting. We’ll need input and any other suggestions from club members to improve our club functions and facilities. Hope to hear your comments at our next meeting.
